My clients ask me this one again and again: is there a real difference between a protein shake with water and a fresh piece of meat? There is. Just not where most people look for it.
Short answer: Beef and whey protein both contain a lot of essential amino acids, so both are first-class protein sources. Fresh food has more micronutrients, enzymes and phytonutrients. Take protein powder if you want, but most of your plate should be fresh, less processed food.
Which protein powder to pick
There are several types: beef protein, vegan pea protein, whey and so on. I clearly recommend whey. It is the one used in scientific research. It is also the cheapest and at the same time the highest quality supplement form for getting protein in.
Macronutrients and micronutrients
Every food is made of macronutrients and micronutrients.
- Macronutrients: protein, carbohydrate, fat and fiber. Fiber is basically a carbohydrate, just less digestible.
- Micronutrients: minerals, trace elements and vitamins.
Macro means the bigger parts, micro the smaller ones. Some are added to a protein powder (you see them listed in the table on the pack). Some you find in an apple, some in beef. Every food has a slightly different mix, or different amounts.
And the micronutrients matter. Fresh food has more of them, plus more enzymes and phytonutrients, which are good for digestion, health and your gut bacteria. A fresh piece of meat or an apple will have more of these than a long-life, more processed product like protein powder.
So you can keep getting protein from powder. But in your diet you want most of the food to be fresh, unprocessed, short shelf life stuff. More on that in ultra-processed food.
What happens to protein in your body
Put simply, and not very scientifically:
- Fat breaks down into fatty acids. In that form it travels in the blood and the body works with it.
- Carbohydrate breaks down into glucose. That gets used, or stored in muscle, liver, fat cells and so on.
- Protein breaks down into amino acids.
Picture protein as a molecule and amino acids as the atoms inside it. Protein as a whole cannot enter the blood. It gets chopped up and reaches the bloodstream as amino acids.
The 9 essential amino acids
There are 9 essential amino acids. The body cannot make them, it has to get them from food. This is where vegans who do not understand nutrition can struggle, because animal food has the most of them and they do not know what to replace it with.
3 of them are in BCAA (branched chain amino acids): leucine, valine and isoleucine. These have the biggest effect on muscle and muscle recovery.
Beef and whey protein both have quite a lot of essential amino acids per gram of food. That makes both of them first-class protein.
How much protein per meal
Eat 30 to 40 g of protein from meat or whey and you get roughly the maximum recovery out of it, even if you carry a lot of muscle.
Protein targets are counted by the content of those essential amino acids. That is why they always say "this much a day from QUALITY sources", which usually means animal sources, or at least a mix of animal and plant. If you ate 30 to 40 g of protein from bread, you would formally eat the same amount of protein, but there would be fewer essential amino acids in it. Plant foods simply have a smaller share of them. Your daily target is in how much protein do you need, or count it on the protein calculator.
Plant vs animal protein: the newer data
Since 2021, though, data have been showing that plant and animal proteins can support muscle growth comparably. It could shake up the way we have looked at protein so far. I broke down the newest study in plant vs animal protein.
Frequently asked questions
Which protein powder should I choose?
Whey. It is used in scientific research, and it is the cheapest and at the same time the highest quality supplement form for getting protein in.
How much protein in one meal is enough for muscle recovery?
30 to 40 g of protein from meat or whey gives you roughly the maximum recovery, even if you are very muscular.
Is protein from bread as good as protein from meat?
Formally you eat the same amount of protein, but there are fewer essential amino acids in it, because plant foods have a smaller share of them. Since 2021, though, data show that plant and animal proteins can support muscle growth comparably.
What are essential amino acids?
There are 9 of them and the body cannot make them, it has to get them from food. Three of them, leucine, valine and isoleucine, are in BCAA and have the biggest effect on muscle and recovery.
